David Mellor, Ph.D.

Dr David Mellor is Associate Dean (International) for the Faculty of Health and a Professor in the School of Psychology at Deakin University in Australia. Based at the Burwood campus, half his time is dedicated to his professorship in the School, while with the other half he represents the Faculty of Health in its global engagement activities, such as the development of research partnerships with universities around the world.

Eighteen years of experience working as a clinical psychologist in the Western Australian and Victorian public health systems after completing his Masters continues to inform Professor Mellor’s teaching today. He supervises doctorial students and 4th year students as well as teaching in the postgraduate psychology programs.

In his own work, Professor Mellor has a strong interest in intercultural psychology. He has received fellowships to work in Chile on projects investigating racism toward indigenous people, a topic on which he completed his PhD in Australia. A second area of research relates to child and adolescent body dissatisfaction and culture. Over the past ten years, he has initiated and led a series of international studies into adolescent body dissatisfaction and body change behaviours. The first of these studies focused on Indigenous Australian adolescents. Subsequent studies focusing on adolescents in Chile, Malaysia, Japan and China, included research collaborators in these locations. This research has highlighted the role of culture in both body dissatisfaction and body change behaviours, and demonstrated that Western models cannot be imposed in other contexts, thereby setting a new agenda for this research area.

The work by Professor Mellor and his colleagues has attracted significant research funding (such as Australian Research Council and National Health and Medical Research Council grants). One recent ARC-funded project focused on indigenous men’s health, with the aim of gaining a greater understanding of the meaning of health and the barriers to health as well as the facilitators of good health amongst indigenous men. Recent NHMRC funding has supported work on dementia and aged care services. From his research, Professor Mellor has published more than 200 journal articles and 12 book chapters.
