Progress Report, January 22, 2008

1.      In order to determine the reproducibility of ASTM Designation D6802 entitled “Test Method for Determination of the Relative Content of Dissolved Decay Products in Mineral Insulating Oils by Spectrophotometry” a Round Robin test has been successfully carried out over the last month. Salto Grande Hydro Plant located in Uruguay sent several new and in service-aged transformer oil samples to four other laboratories in Canada, Sweden and the Philippines. The excellent result of this international cooperation is available in the Research Report section.

1.      Due to the donations of Jaxon Filtration and InsOil Canada, the ISOLIME project was able to order for its laboratory a computerized stability tester according to ASTM Designation D6180 entitled “Standard Test Method for Stability of Insulating Oils of Petroleum Origin Under Electrical Discharge”. Beside the gas evolvement of a new, in-service aged or reclaimed oil test specimen visualized by this state-of-the-art instrument on the screen of a wireless laptop, the hidden side effects of gassing are also determined. 2.      Recently, the laboratory of Israel Electric Company expressed interest in becoming a collaborator in ISOILME project. As a first step of cooperation between Israel and Canada, several in service aged oil samples are going to be shipped to UQAC for the determination of dissolved decay products and turbidity. Thus, the real extent of oil decay in certain aging transformers will be established.

have been accepted by the IEEE International Conference on Dielectric Liquids to be held this summer in Poitiers, France. Details are available in the Research Report section.

4.      ISOLIME is now performing the ASTM Test Methods D6802 and D6181 for the determination of dissolved decay products by spectrophotometry and turbidity by nephelometry. Hence, companies in Canada or abroad interested in assessing the relationship between the outcome of DGA, the extent of oil decay and the internal insulation of windings, can send oil samples to UQAC. How Salto Grande Hydro Plant managed to detect the malfunction of some rubber bladders by measuring these parameters, is published in the EIM. To read the article Click Here.
