My Ph.D. focus on the stability and productivity of intertidal benthic communities of the St. Lawrence in relation to species richness, evenness, species identity and species abundances.

My thesis is in three parts:
Part 1: Role of richness and evenness on community stability.
Part 2: Role of habitat-forming species richness, evenness, identity and abundance on community establishment.
Part 3: Role of richness, evenness, identity and abundance of macroalgae on primary production.

Part 1 informs on communities natural variability. This variability was contrasted with natural richness and evenness levels to understand community dynamics before manipulating them in parts 2 and 3. In Part 2, the communities were manipulated in situ, there is a balance between the real and the experimental. By manipulating the variables under study in the field, it was possible to better understand the response of the associated species communities to a change in the richness, evenness, identity and abundance of the habitat-forming species identified in Part 1. Primary production of communities was measured in the field for part 1 and 2. The third part is in mesocosm, allowing the control of biomass and refinement of the response of richness, evenness, identity and abundance of the communities on primary production. We therefore move on from Part 1 where no control over the surrounding variables and the biomass of the organisms is performed, which allows us to obtain a real picture of the dynamics of the communities, to a more controlled environment in Part 3, which makes it possible to clearly identify the variables and mechanisms under study, but at the cost of reduced realism.
