Chapter 1 gives the geological background. It is an introduction to the relevant aspects of the subject. Subjects treated are: Structure of the Earth, Basic rock cycle, Igneous rocks and volcanism, Components of a typical volcanic eruption, Sedimentary rocks, Metamorphism and metamorphic rocks, Plate tectonics, Local tectonics, The glacial period and recent climatic change, Sea level changes, Weathering and soils, Hydrogeology, Karst landscapes, Beach rock, Earthquakes

Chapter 2 treats the geological history of the Mediterranean region with special emphasis on the Aegean. Subjects treated are: The geological framework, Isopic Zones and massifs, Geological development of the Aegean, Recent geological events

Chapters 3 to 16 are devoted to the geology of different regions of Greece and the Aegean coast of Turkey. Each chapter starts with a brief introduction to the culture and geology of the region. Then follows a description of the major sites with archaeological and geological interest. Each site description starts with a brief cultural introduction and continues with a detailed description of the bedrock geology. We talk about the tectonic setting, the influence of recent geological changes, whether brought about by nature or people, and the source of construction stone. Other aspects are treated for special sites. The chapter titles and sites are as follows:
