We aim to examine how the concepts, practices, and experiences of spirituality have influenced the ways in which men and women interacted in intimate spheres, how the colonial context influenced these relationships, and reciprocally, how experiences of intimacy and spirituality shaped colonial power and its management. Such investigative work calls for cross-methodological perspectives and encourages dialogue among the cultures involved – European, Indigenous, Canadian – since the colonization of the territory would have been impossible without the construction of a «colonial imaginary» seeking to define, understand, and address otherness through a series of discourses, beliefs, and foundational myths that can now be retrospectively examined through historical documents, religious writings, epistolary exchanges, travel narratives, and other literary works that bear witness to them. Additionally, a contrasting perspective is considered by acknowledging Indigenous viewpoints and their sites of memory (oral tradition, material culture, rituals, and practices).

Therefore, the main objective is to foster constructive and meaningful discussions across disciplines (history, theology, literature, ethnology, archaeology, architecture, art history), as well as with Indigenous communities. This is why we have chosen to organize the conference at the Pavillon de la culture des peuples autochtones, within a Canadian university that hosts one of the largest contingents of students from First Nations – the University of Québec in Chicoutimi. Our ambition is to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where researchers from diverse backgrounds, whether academic or independent, members of allochthonous or Indigenous communities, can learn from each other and collectively explore the intersection of spirituality and intimacy in a dialogue between past and present.

There will be two outcomes of the event: 1) a scholarly publication, either in the form of a special issue in an internationally peer-reviewed journal or as an edited volume, and 2) video materials showcasing the presentations and discussions for a broader audience, aiming to transfer the knowledge generated to Indigenous communities and contribute to the promotion of intercultural dialogue.

We invite researchers at all career levels and from various historical disciplines to submit proposals for presentations addressing the intimate and spiritual aspects in the formation of the colonial regime up to its questioning and dismantling. We strongly encourage members of Indigenous communities interested in these topics to register for participation (it is not necessary to submit a formal presentation proposal). An advisory committee, made up of researchers from First Nations, will be responsible for organizing the “indigenous research” component of the meeting, in accordance with the guidelines of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada.

Themes of the Conference: We welcome proposals addressing the following themes, without being limited to them:

Religious Conversion and Identity: The role of spirituality in the conversion of Indigenous peoples and its impact on their sense of identity.

Intimacy and Missionary Encounters: Interactions between European missionaries and Indigenous communities and how these encounters influenced both spiritual beliefs and intimate relationships.

Family and Community Dynamics: The formation and regulation of colonial families, their structures, and how religion and intimacy intersect within them.

Religious Practices and Rituals: The rituals and religious practices of New France and their significance in promoting spiritual experiences, devotion, and intimate connections.

Material Culture and Spirituality: The material culture of the time, including religious objects, texts, and art, and their impact on spirituality and intimacy with a particular focus on the cultural exchange of techniques and motifs.

Legacies and Modern Perspectives: The lasting impact of colonial spirituality and intimacy in contemporary contexts.

Submission Guidelines:

Contribution proposals should be between 250 and 300 words.

Include a brief biography (100 words) describing your academic background and research interests.

Submit in PDF format to Bastian Felter Vaucanson (bva@teol.ku.dk) and Luc Vaillancourt (luc_vaillancourt@uqac.ca) by June 21, 2024.

Important Dates:

Submission deadline for abstracts: June 21, 2024.

Acceptance notification: July 2024.

Conference dates: October 4-5, 2024.

Conference Organizers: Bastian Felter Vaucanson, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Carlsberg Foundation, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, and affiliated researcher at the Centre for Privacy Studies;
