SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Département des arts, des lettres et du langage at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) is seeking a qualified candidate to work in its Second Language English teaching programs and Master’s in Linguistics program.
At the undergraduate level, the candidate will be expected to:
- Teach courses related to TESL methodology and other relevant courses;
- Teach English as a second language courses such as reading comprehension, written production, and grammar;
- Supervise TESL internships in schools (elementary and secondary) and contribute to interns’ evaluation;
- Contribute to the organization of the Baccalauréat en enseignement des langues secondes sector (BEALS) (participate in the administration of the BEALS admission test and language tests required by the MEES);
- Assist in organizing the biennially SPEAQ conference on campus.
At the graduate level, the candidate could:
- Deliver graduate-level seminars, particularly in applied linguistics, according to program needs and the candidate’s expertise, and supervise students in the completion of their research projects.
In research, the candidate will be required to:
- Conduct research and collaborations (particularly with the faculty team of the Language Sciences and Communication Teaching Unit) and maintain an active research program in their areas of expertise.
As part of the programs in teaching English as a second language:
- Actively participate in the management and development of the programs in the sector;
- Provide services to the university and regional community in their areas of expertise.
REQUIREMENTS
- Ph.D. in Teaching English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics (with a specialization in second language teaching);
- Proficiency in English equivalent to that of a native English speaker;
- Working knowledge of French (spoken and written), or, if not, demonstrate a willingness to engage in a process of learning French, given that teaching (at the graduate level) and academic life activities at UQAC are conducted in French (Language Policy).
ASSETS
- Experience in teaching English as a second language at the elementary and/or secondary level;
- Demonstrate research aptitude by including relevant publications and presentations;
- Have knowledge of the ESL education system in Quebec/North America;
- Experience and show the ability to engage in community service;
- Have studied a second or foreign language;
- Interest in teaching one or more of the following courses:
– 7ENL232 Literature-Based ESL Teaching;
– 7ENL233 Classroom Management for Second Language Teaching;
– 7ENL234 Differentiated Instruction and Assessment in the Second Language Classroom;
– 7ENL342 Teaching outside the Quebec system.
SALARY
The salary is determined based on qualifications and experience.
WORK CONDITIONS
The work conditions are governed by the current collective agreement.
WORKPLACE
The workplace is in Chicoutimi and, occasionally, at study centers.
