Project description

I am looking for highly motivated candidates for PhD studies in the field of Metallurgy and Materials Science Engineering with a major interest in Mechanical/Physical Metallurgy of Al Alloys. The candidate should have a first class MSc degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science Engineering, with previous research experiences on Phase Transformation, Microstructure Characterisation, Thermomechanical Processing, & Product Development of Metallic Materials (preferably, Al Alloys).

Responsibilities
  • To prepare a comprehensive literature-review on impact of various alloying elements on microstructure characterisation and mechanical properties of Al based alloys;
  • To simulate the microstructure evolution in the newly designed alloys;
  • To prepare cast samples, and apply various thermomechanical processing;
  • To characterize the microstructural evolution of the developed alloys;
  • To analyze, interpret and summarize the simulation and experimental data;
  • To develop scientific publications, technical reports, and exchange the developed knowledge with the industrial partners.

Student profile

Qualifications

Requirements include, but not limited to :

  • MSc in Metallurgy and Materials Science Engineering (or Mechanical Engineering with a major on Metal Forming);
  • background/ experience in any of the following areas are highly valued: Phase Transformation & Thermomechanical Processing of Metals (i.e., Al alloys, Steels, etc.), Microstructure Characterization, and Material Process Modelling and Thermodynamic Simulation;
  • hands-on experience on material characterization skills (OM, SEM/EBSD, TEM, XRD, etc);
  • knowledge or previous hands-on experience on alloy selection and characterization technics will be considered a plus;
  • excellent oral, written and verbal communication skills evidenced by a strong publication and conference presentation record;
  • strong organization, analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • proven ability to work quickly and reliably while under pressure.

Requirements and conditions

  • MSc in Metallurgy and Materials Science Engineering (or Mechanical Engineering with a major on Metal Forming);
  • have a valid passport in hand;
  • at least 2 years of  research experiences on of the following area: Computational Thermodynamics/ Characterization/ Transformation/ Thermomechanical Processing of Metals;
  • have already developed at least one journal articles as the 1st author;
  • good oral and writing In proficiency.

Financing

The position is fully funded for 3 years, with a possibility of extension up to 4 years.
