Synthetic esters as alternatives to mineral oil in transformers serving in cold regions

This research work aims to study the prebreakdown phenomena in low pour point dielectric esters for applications in transformers serving cold regions. These liquids represent a safer investment in a more environmentally friendly world. The expected results will not only deepen our knowledge of prebreakdown behaviour, but will also benefit engineers for better design of tomorrow’s transformer insulation system. In addition, the regenerative aspects of these new fluids (ester fluids) are important to manage end-of-life situations and possible useful life extension. Therefore, the present research will also explore avenues for the regeneration of ester fluids.
