Purpose

This activity aims to raise awareness of the historical dispossession experienced by Indigenous peoples in Canada and its ongoing impacts today.

Relevance

Understanding and acknowledging this history is essential to building a better shared future. To support this, we recommend the Blanket Exercise Workshop, which offers both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants an opportunity to revisit this difficult past together through a citizen-driven approach to reconciliation.

Developed in collaboration with Elders, knowledge keepers and Indigenous educators, the KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an interactive, experiential learning tool that explores the historical and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples on the land now known as Canada.

Kate Bacon

An Innu from the community of Pessamit, Kate Bacon has spent recent years raising awareness among non-Indigenous audiences about the history and current realities of First Peoples, with the goal of fostering stronger relationships among nations.

She left her community in 2013 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in secondary French education at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC). After graduating, she began working at the Saguenay Native Friendship Centre. Since November 2023, Kate Bacon has been a student life advisor specializing in development and cultural safety at Cégep de Jonquière, where she leads the Blanket Exercise Workshop with the support of allies.
